CONGRATULATIONS…

 

to ME junior Melissa Jensen-Morgan, whose accomplishments have led her to be featured on one of the “Faces of OSU” banners lining Jefferson Street (on the corner of Waldo and Jefferson, closest to the MU parking lot). Among these accomplishments include a stint as Tektronix Scholar during her freshman year, working on a MECS research project), and participation in the NASA Robotics Program at Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. During this 10-week lunar exploration robotics program, Jensen-Morgan was one of three OSU students to be honored by NASA as three of the program’s top-four participants!

 

to ME Professor Stel Walker, one of three inventors on a recently patented Architectural Wind turbine system, rolled out by AeroVironment, Inc., at last week’s WIRED NextFest 2006 in New York City.

 

to Materials Science Professor Jay Kruzic, who has been honored with the College of Engineering's Engelbrecht Young Faculty Award for 2005-06. This award, established by retired ECE faculty member Rudolf (Rudi) Engelbrecht and his wife Christel, recognizes outstanding young faculty in the College of Engineering. Criteria for the award are having "demonstrated exceptional scholarly and teaching accomplishments", and having "outstanding potential for achieving tenure and promotion to full professor in due time." Dr. Kruzic becomes the first Mechanical Engineering faculty member to have won the award since its inception in 1997. The award includes $10,000 to be used in support of Dr. Kruzic’s continued scholarly and teaching activities.

Monday, October 2: EWB General Meeting—first of the year. 6 pm in Batcheller 250 (the building between Covell and Dearborn and across the street from Kidder and the Milne Computer Center)..  There will be a brief overview of EWB-USA and its mission and goals, EWB-OSU and its activities, and a presentation by the El Salvador Project site assessment team who recently returned to the states.  All OSU students, faculty, and community members are welcome. This is a great opportunity for you to learn more about EWB-OSU and get involved—and YES!  Free pizza will be served!

Learn about professional groups at the COE, and meet with industry representatives from IBM, XEROX, Business Educational Compact, and ODOT.  (Note: Xerox is especially interested in ME students). Friday, October 6: First Annual EWB-OSU Project Benefit Banquet, 6–8:30 pm in the  OSU Memorial Union Ballroom. Come celebrate the success of our project thus far and support its implementation. Enjoy a silent auction of pieces donated by artists in the community followed by an authentic Salvadoran meal. Our project team will also present details about the project to date. Banquet tickets are $50 and all proceeds support the material costs and implementation expenses of the El  Salvador Water Project. Friday, October 6: Center for Teaching and Learning Workshop: Survival Skills for Instructors New To Teaching.” 2-5 pm, MU 211. This session will be of particular interest to instructors new to teaching. CTL Director Dr. Peter Saunders will discuss and answer questions on some of the most critical aspects of teaching in higher learning. Issues such as establishing the teaching/learning environment discipline in the classroom, effective teaching behaviors, and motivation will be addressed. This meeting will serve as a way to recruit new members and we will be voting on SAE President, Vice President, and Secretary.

Tuesday, October 10: Elizabeth Grossman talks about her new book, High Tech Trash. 12 -1 pm in Kelley Engineering Center, Room 1005. Grossman issues a warning about the growing global issue of "e-waste" and in a section, "How to Recycle a Computer, Cell Phone, TV, or Other Digital Device," summarizes the resources now available to those with a cyber-conscience. "There is an urgent need for e-waste regulation, and Grossman's informative, harrowing, and invaluable report—is essential." (from Booklist). This event is FREE and open to the public. Sack lunches welcome.

Wednesday, October 11: Engineers Without Borders (EWB) El Salvador Project kickoff meeting,  6 pm in Cordley 3121. (Note change from usual meeting location.)  Everyone is welcome and invited to attend.  This Fall, EWB-OSU will see the project move from the site assessment phase into the design phase. We're hoping to begin construction in El Salvador in the spring!  Come to this meeting to find out how to get involved--or email Kelsey Edwardsen at kelseyedwardsen@hotmail.com.

Friday, October 13: Center for Teaching and Learning Lunchtime Workshop: “Explore the Future of Teaching.” 12-1 pm, Milam 215. Come explore OSU’s latest faculty development facility, the Advanced Academy for Teaching and Learning, located in 215 Milam Hall. CTL Director Peter Saunders will provide an introduction to the facility and outline how the Academy will serve you and improve your students’ learning. Dr. Saunders will also introduce faculty to the CTL’s Best Teaching Practices video library. Refreshments will be served and there will be drawings for door prizes. Tuesday, October 17: Center for Teaching and Learning Workshop: “Engaging Learners through a Living Syllabus.” 2-5 pm, Milam 215.  Professor Mark Wilson of the College of Wooster will share with faculty his innovative and engaging syllabi that he has been developing since 1999. Students and their parents have both commented on the value his syllabi have had in motivating them to learn and engage in the study of geology and other topics. You will see how multiple learning preferences and interests are served and how learners are encouraged to explore geology in depth. Please bring your own syllabi to the workshop. Friday, October 27: Center for Teaching and Learning Workshop: “Assessment Part I: Are Your Students Learning?” 2-5 pm, Milam 215. Teaching is not learning.  This rather startling observation by Thomas Angelo, which appears in his best selling book College Assessment, points out a major challenge facing all instructors. This workshop introduces key concepts regarding assessment, demonstrates three different tools faculty across all disciplines can use to ensure that what they are teaching is indeed being learned, and familiarizes attendees with Angelo and Cross’ excellent book of assessment tools. Friday, November 3: Center for Teaching and Learning Workshop: “Assessment Part II: Assessment Tools and Their Use in the Classroom.” 2-5 pm, Milam 215. This workshop is a follow-up to the previous week’s  introductory workshop on assessment.  Dr. Saunders will introduce the Classroom Assessment Project Cycle and attendees will have an opportunity to complete the Teaching Goals Inventory, which identifies instructor goals and will be used to select related assessment tools.  Dr. Saunders will then illustrate how different assessment tools can be used to engage learners, promote learning, and track achievement of learning outcomes. Friday, November 17: Center for Teaching and Learning Workshop: “Addressing Student Learning Styles in Your Classrooms.” 2-5 pm, Milam 215. A substantial body of research suggests that students vary in the way they take in and give out information and that they often learn best when they have an opportunity to learn and express their knowledge in their preferred mode(s). This workshop introduces Neil Fleming’s VARK tool for identifying learning preferences, the four learning preference categories, and implications of the scoring system. Handouts will be provided on how instructors can modify their courses and assignments to appeal to the variety of learner needs. WINTER PRO SCHOOL APPLICATIONS ARE NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE at http://engr.oregonstate.edu/students/apps/index.html.  They are due Nov. 1.

 

ATTENTION ALL FRESHMEN, SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS INTERESTED IN THE FORMULA SAE TEAM: a one-credit ME 206 Projects class is scheduled for this term.  The class will meet Tuesday evenings, 7- 7:50 pm, in Rogers 440.  Guest speakers will discuss various engineering aspects of race car vehicle design.  Grading will be based on attendance.  The first meeting is Tuesday, October 3rd.

 

UPCOMING DEPARTMENT OPEN HOUSES FOR ENGINEERING STUDENTS. Beginning later this week, all engineering departments with undergraduate programs will be holding evening open houses as an opportunity for engineering students to find out about the variety of engineering programs available here at OSU. EWB NEWS. Along with the meeting announcements listed in the Events section of this bulletin, here are a few other items of possible interest to members of our departments:

§          Mechanical engineers may now use EWB projects as part of their senior theses!  For specific details, please contact Douglas Van Bossuyt (Douglas.VanBossuyt@gmail.com). EWB-OSU is also working hard on bringing more opportunities for class credit and senior project integration to all majors.  If you would like to help in this process, please email Douglas.

§          Design EWB-OSU T-Shirt for the 06'-07' school year.  Make it about whatever you want that's EWB-OSU related!  Be creative!  Have fun!  Make multiple designs!  The deadline for entries is November 1st at 7 pm.  The top designs will be posted to EWB-OSU's website and the mailing list.  We will hold a vote at the following general meeting to choose the winning T-Shirt design that will represent EWB-OSU for the next year.  The creator of the winning design will receive a FREE T-SHIRT!  Submit entries to Douglas Van Bossuyt (Douglas.VanBossuyt@gmail.com)

§          EWB-OSU is still looking for a fundraising coordinator for the 06'-07' school year. Working with EWB’er Brad Eagleson (the EWB-OSU assistant fundraising coordinator) to raise he funds to keep EWB-OSU running. Every member of EWB-OSU is expected to get involved in fundraisers, So help is readily available.  At the discretion of the fundraising coordinator, each fundraiser can have a different coordinator specifically for that fundraiser.  If you're interested, please talk to any of the board members at the next general meeting or email Douglas Van Bossuyt (Douglas.VanBossuyt@gmail.com)

WIRELESS HELPDESK FOR LAPTOP COMPUTER USERS. The Wireless Helpdesk is located in Dearborn 107 and is open Mon–Fri 9 am–4 pm throughout the school year (hours may be extended the first two weeks of classes).
