OSU
MECHANICAL, INDUSTRIAL, and MANUFACTURING ENGINEERING E-BULLETIN
Vol 2. Issue #3
Week of October 2, 2006
CONGRATULATIONS…
…to
ME junior Melissa Jensen-Morgan,
whose accomplishments have led her to be featured on one of the “Faces of OSU”
banners lining Jefferson Street (on the corner of Waldo and Jefferson,
closest to the MU parking lot). Among these accomplishments include a
stint as Tektronix Scholar during her freshman year, working on a MECS
research project), and participation in the NASA Robotics Program at
Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.
During this 10-week lunar exploration robotics program, Jensen-Morgan was one
of three OSU students to be honored by NASA as three of the program’s
top-four participants!
…to
ME Professor Stel Walker, one of
three inventors on a recently patented Architectural
Wind
turbine system, rolled out by AeroVironment, Inc.,
at last week’s WIRED NextFest 2006 in
New York City.
…to Materials Science Professor Jay Kruzic, who has been honored with
the College of Engineering's Engelbrecht
Young Faculty Award for 2005-06.
This award, established by retired ECE faculty member Rudolf (Rudi) Engelbrecht and his wife Christel,
recognizes outstanding young faculty in the College of Engineering.
Criteria for the award are having "demonstrated exceptional scholarly and
teaching accomplishments", and having "outstanding potential for
achieving tenure and promotion to full professor in due time." Dr. Kruzic
becomes the first Mechanical Engineering faculty member to have won the award
since its inception in 1997. The award includes $10,000 to be used in support
of Dr. Kruzic’s continued scholarly and teaching activities.
Attention e-bulletin readers: Do you
know of other IME or ME students, faculty members, or alums (or better still,
are you one yourself?) who also merits our departments’ acknowledgment and
congratulations? If so, please don’t be shy about letting us know—we’re proud
of the diverse talents of all of our department members and very much want to
recognize ALL deserving individuals. Send the details to tracy.ann.robinson@oregonstate.edu (or drop by Rogers 210 with the good news!).

Students and their parents have both commented on the value his syllabi have
had in motivating them to learn and engage in the study of geology and other
topics. You will see how multiple learning preferences and interests are served
and how learners are encouraged to explore geology in depth. Please bring your
own syllabi to the workshop. Register for the workshop at http://oregonstate.edu/ctl or send an email to CTL@oregonstate.edu.

Friday,
October 27: Center for Teaching and
Learning Workshop: “Assessment Part I: Are Your Students Learning?” 2-5 pm,
Milam 215. Teaching is not learning. This rather startling
observation by Thomas Angelo, which appears in his best selling book College
Assessment, points out a major challenge facing all instructors.
This workshop introduces key concepts regarding assessment, demonstrates three
different tools faculty across all disciplines can use to ensure that what they
are teaching is indeed being learned, and familiarizes attendees with Angelo
and Cross’ excellent book of assessment tools. Please register at http://oregonstate.edu/ctl or send an email to CTL@oregonstate.edu.
Friday,
November 3: Center for Teaching and
Learning Workshop: “Assessment Part II: Assessment Tools and Their Use in the
Classroom.” 2-5 pm, Milam 215. This workshop is a follow-up to the previous
week’s introductory
workshop on assessment. Dr. Saunders will introduce the Classroom
Assessment Project Cycle and attendees will have an opportunity to complete the
Teaching Goals Inventory, which identifies instructor goals and will be used to
select related assessment tools. Dr. Saunders will then illustrate how
different assessment tools can be used to engage learners, promote learning,
and track achievement of learning outcomes. Please register at http://oregonstate.edu/ctl or send an email to CTL@oregonstate.edu.
Thursday,
November 16: Weatherford Fireside Chat with Jim Sheldon, President of
Automation Systems Group. 7:30 pm, Weatherford Hall Trysting
Tree Conference Room D107. Sign-up and more information at
https://www.bus.oregonstate.edu/aepfellows/ViewFellow.aspx?FellowID=93.
Friday,
November 17: Center for Teaching and
Learning Workshop: “Addressing Student Learning Styles in Your Classrooms.”
2-5 pm, Milam 215. A substantial body of research suggests that students vary
in the way they take in and give out information and that they often learn best
when they have an opportunity to learn and express their knowledge in their
preferred mode(s). This workshop introduces Neil Fleming’s VARK tool for
identifying learning preferences, the four learning preference categories, and
implications of the scoring system. Handouts will be provided on how
instructors can modify their courses and assignments to appeal to the variety
of learner needs. Please register at http://oregonstate.edu/ctl or send an email to CTL@oregonstate.edu.
