Congratulations to the OSU SAE Mini Baja Team,

FIRST PLACE WINNERS

of the 2006 MINI BAJA WEST

 

Out of 87 registered teams (including 22 international), OSU took first place in Marketing Presentation, Design Report, and Design Presentation. Also, first place overall in Dynamic events, with second-place finishes in Maneuverability and Rock Crawl. Fourth place in Endurance Race. Way to go Beaver Racing!!!

 

 

And don’t forget about the 7th annual OSU ENGINEERING EXPO,

this Friday (May 19th), 2–5 pm in the Kelley Engineering Center.

Over fifty of this year’s CoE Senior Design Projects will be on display, including 18 from Mechanical Engineering. Also at the expo will be demos of this year’s winning ME 382 “breath-controlled” fishing rod, Formula, Mini Baja, and HPV cars, a TekBot Triathlon, FIRST robots from local high schools, and more. This event is free and open to the public and is a great way to show our community what we’re doing here in the College of Engineering. All ME students, staff, and faculty are encouraged to attend—bring your friends and families!

Monday, May 15: Women and Minorities in Engineering invite you to a celebration of Freshman and Sophomore Undergraduate Research. 5–6 pm, Kelley Engineering Center Atrium. Free and open to the public--family and future students are welcome and encouraged to attend. Appetizers, Kelley Center tours, and Segway scooter rides! Research projects are sponsored by Tektronix and Intel.

 

Monday, May 15: Engineers Without Borders meeting to nail down logistics for the two presentations on Wednesday May 17 (see below). 5 pm, JAVA II.  Please come if you are interested in this week's fundraising efforts!!!

Tuesday, May 16: Election Day. In order to be counted, your ballot must be received by a County Elections Office or deposited in an official ballot drop site no later than 8:00 PM. Post office postmarks do not count.  The ballot must be deposited or received by May 16th. The OSU campus ballot drop site is at the Valley Library (open 7:30 AM to 1:00 AM). There are also two 24-hour ballot drop boxes in Benton County: 180 NW Fifth Street (across the street from the Benton County Courthouse) and Wells Fargo Bank next to Pizza Hut, in the Timberhill Shopping Center (2543 NW Kings).  Note: If your ballot is from another county, you may drop it off at any county ballot box, as long as you do so no later than 8:00 PM Tuesday, May 16th.

Wednesday, May 17: Engineers Without Borders presentation/ info session at CH2MHill. Noon (volunteers needed from 11:30 to 1:30) This is not only great practice for fundraising, but also an opportunity for networking, as companies home in on sharply dressed students who are part of such an organization. Thursday, May 18: CoE Brown-Bag Lunch Presentation: “The Impostor Syndrome” by Valerie Young. 12 noon, Owen 102. Free and open to all CoE students, staff, and faculty.  Do you secretly worry that others will find out you're not as intelligent and competent as they seem to think you are? Do you often dismiss your accomplishments as a "fluke" or "no big deal?" Do you sometimes shy away from challenge because of nagging self-doubt? Join us at this lunchtime presentation to learn about the so-called Impostor Syndrome and how it operates in every day life; how race, class, and gender can and do contribute to feelings of fraudulence; and how to stop the perfectionism, procrastination, and chronic self-doubt standing between you and your goals.

 

NOTE: In addition to this lunch time CoE meeting, the Women and Minorities in Engineering Office, in collaboration with Willamette SWE, OSU Office of Community and Diversity, and OSU SWE, are hosting a free evening meeting at 6:30 pm in LaSells, CEM room for students and community members. Friday, May 19: Austin Entrepreneurship Program Signature Event: “Commercializing Innovation.” LaSells Stewart Center on Friday, May 19th from 9 am through lunch.  A continental breakfast will be available at 8:30 am and lunch will end at 1:30 pm with tours of Weatherford Hall to follow for anyone interested.  There is no cost for COE faculty, staff or students. Friday, May 19:  Sustainability/Renewable Energy presentation by Cylvia Hayes, one of Oregon's experts in the field of sustainability. 12 noon, Kelley Engineering Center. Check at KEC front desk for room number.  Cylvia Hayes, founder and director of 3EStrategies in Bend, believes Oregon can become an international leader in the clean energy industry and will discuss how individuals can help speed the transition to a "greener" economy. Hayes currently serves as a member of Oregon's Renewable Energy Working Group and is a member of the Central Oregon Economic Development Strategy Committee.  Last year, Oregon Business Magazine recognized her as one of the state's 50 top leaders.

Friday, May 19:The Boeing 787 and Nanotechnology.” ME Seminar presentation by Russell Maguire, The Boeing Company. 4 pm, Rogers 226 (social time w/coffee and tea starts at 3:30 pm).

 

ABSTRACT: This will be a power point presentation on the Boeing 787, first all-composite commercial airplane, and the opportunities that provides for nanotechnology improvements to performance and cost.

The COE IS LOOKING FOR A FEW GOOD AMBASSADORS. Do you enjoy sharing your collegiate experiences with others? Do you want to gain valuable communications and leadership skills, and event-planning experience? Do you welcome the opportunity to contribute to the university's recruitment and diversity efforts? Would you like the chance to work directly with university faculty members and administrators? Could you benefit from networking with peers and professionals in your field of study? Are you a hard worker who enjoys having fun? If you answer "yes" to many of these questions, you may be an ideal candidate to serve as an Ambassador for the College of Engineering! Ambassadors serve as representatives for the College of Engineering and are responsible for supporting recruiting and diversity efforts. Ambassadors lend support in many ways They may mentor new students, travel to high schools to make presentations, assist in family science nights, attend on-campus recruiting events, professional conferences, industry and alumni events, host students and parents who visit campus; and contact prospective students. (Note: Because of travel, priority will be given to students who have one full day per week available for work.)  Benefits of CoE Ambassadorship include: Prestige associated with serving on a team of highly motivated and respected undergraduates; the opportunity to network with university administrators, faculty, industry professionals, and political figures; the chance to positively contribute to the colleges' student-recruitment efforts; valuable work and leadership experience to include on resumes and to discuss during interviews; and last but not least, $10/hour. STUDENTS: REGISTER YOUR VOTE FOR OUTSTANDING CoE PROFESSOR! Each year the College of Engineering selects a professor to receive the Carter Award. This award is a reward for outstanding undergraduate teaching. The basis for selection is student voting. For accurate results, it is important that you indicate each engineering professor from whom you have taken a class and the professor who you think did the best job. Some professors may not be listed because they are not allowed to receive the award more often than once every five years. We will close balloting on May 15. LAST WEEK OF FALL TERM ADVISING. Advising for Fall 2007 will continue through May 19th, so if you haven’t already done so, please sign up in Dearborn 102 for your 15-minute appointment. Check on the ME Bulletin Board outside of Dearborn 102 to see who your advisor is, as assignments may have changed. ALL ME students (pre- and proschool) must be advised each and every term.

 

ENGINEERS WITHOUT BORDERS is seeking applicants for the second site assessment to El SalvadorThe travel will be 10 days during the summer, with exact dates to be decided based on applicants' schedules.  The application form and instructions are available at http://me.oregonstate.edu/news/bulletins/EWBSiteAssessmentApp2.pdf, and the application deadline is Monday May 15th. You do not need any specific technical skills to apply, so please highlight anything that you think would be valuable in developing a relationship with this  community. This trip will be focused on continuing to build a relationship with the community, getting flow data, doing health presentations, GPS data collection, and technical solutions  proposals. The OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY INDUSTRIAL ASSESSMENT CENTER (IAC) is currently recruiting student employees. The minimum commitment for involvement is two summers & one school year, 10-20 hours/week during school, full time in summer. The IAC offers small and medium-sized manufacturers comprehensive on-site energy, waste and productivity assessments. Student teams led by engineering faculty visit Northwest manufacturers and seek ways to increase profits by increasing productivity and reducing energy use and waste.
