FACULTY/GRADUATE SEMINARS
Tuesday, May 2: “Collaborative Decision-Making in an Information-Driven
Product-Development Framework.” Presentation by Angran Xiao,
Iowa State University. 9
am, Rogers 226.
New paradigms and accompanying software systems are necessary
for integrating system-level design and discipline-level analysis activities
into the product development process. This seminar describes an
information-driven product-development framework in which such integration is
supported by a model for representing the associativities among design
requirements and product and design parameters.
This framework provides an effective way to trace the impact
of design changes, facilitate the
reuse of analysis models, and
support streamlined decision-making. However,
collaborative decision-making within this framework remains a challenge.
Accordingly, the use of game theory
principles and design capability indices to model the relationships between
design teams and to help teams make ranged sets of decisions is proposed in
this seminar. An electronic package design scenario is presented to illustrate
the information-driven product development framework as well as the efficacy of
the collaborative decision making methodology in the early stages of produce
realization. Related topics for future research will also be discussed.
Thursday,
May 4: “Experimental-Computational Mechanics Solution to
Microfracture Localization and its Clinical Significance.” Presentation
by Dr. Gang (Gary) Qi,
Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering,
University of Memphis.
1:30 pm,
Rogers 226.
Crack localization and characterization based on earthquake
hypocenter localization techniques has long been of interest in the study of
engineering materials. Although much has been achieved in this area over the
years, acceptable solutions have not
yet been found for microfracture localization in complex engineering structures
that involve (a) anisotropic materials,
(b) structures with multiple layers of materials,
and (c) low stress levels for long periods of fatigue cycling at high sampling
frequency. In the biomedical realm,
development of such solutions may lead to a better understanding of the fatigue
mechanisms of cemented femur stem constructs of total hip arthroplasty (THA).
This presentation reports on a methodology that can lead to
experimental–computational mechanics solutions to microcrack localization. This
methodology is capable of handling anisotropic materials,
structures with multiple layers of materials loaded at low stress levels and
high sampling frequency. It can automatically tally the number, visualize the distribution,
and animate the progression of microcrack formation. The main technical
characteristics of this method are its sensitivity to micro-level fracture, its noninvasive and nondestructive impact on test
subjects; and its performance in real time. The presentation includes a brief
introduction to cemented total hip arthroplasty; a summary of state-of-the-art
research in related fields; a brief background on microfracture localization, based on earthquake hypocenter localization
techniques; an introduction to experimental mechanics indicators; and a
discussion of applications,
experimental validations, and
emerging developments.
Note: The most current ME Seminar schedule and other OSU seminar
information is available on the Rogers Hall bulletin boards near the ME main
office or at http://me.oregonstate.edu/seminars/.
MISCELLANEOUS ANNOUNCEMENTS
Department-wide…
THE ME DEPARTMENT EXTENDS
OUR CONGRATULATIONS to Robert J. Zaworski, ME freshman and one of only four OSU
undergraduates (and only 20 students statewide!) selected to receive a 2006 Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium
Scholarship. These scholarships are open to new and continuing students in
the disciplines of science,
technology, engineering and
mathematics. Go RJ!
The OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY INDUSTRIAL ASSESSMENT CENTER
(IAC) is currently recruiting student employees. The minimum commitment for
involvement is two summers & one school year,
10-20 hours/week during school, full
time in summer. The IAC offers small and medium-sized manufacturers
comprehensive on-site energy, waste
and productivity assessments. Student teams led by engineering faculty visit
Northwest manufacturers and seek ways to increase profits by increasing
productivity and reducing energy use and waste. To learn more about the Center
and its activities, visit the IAC
web site at http://me.oregonstate.edu/iac/. To apply for IAC
employment, download the application
at http://me.oregonstate.edu/iac/downloads/Job
Application.doc and return your completed form to Joe Junker, 344 Batcheller Hall,
737-5034, JunkerJ@engr.orst.edu.
WANT TO HELP WITH K-12 ENGINEERING OUTREACH ACTIVITIES? The College of Engineering
has a wide variety of volunteer opportunities available for engineering
students interested in working with K12 students and sharing the excitement of
engineering. Twice a month, we will
be sending out a newsletter of upcoming outreach events. If you would like to
receive this outreach newsletter,
please email Ellen Momsen at ellen.momsen@oregonstate.edu and you will be added to
our distribution list. (In your email response,
please include your name, year, and major.) You will then be able to sign up for
events that interest you and fit your schedule. It's a great way to polish
leadership skills, and a lot of fun!
